Edges

Once you’ve decided you want to have a beautiful, long lasting granite countertop for your kitchen, your next task is to choose the right edge. Granite countertop edges come in different varieties, with the most popular styles being Eased or Flat edge, 1/2 Bevel, 1/2 bullnose, Full Bullnose,Demi Bullnose and ogee.

The beauty of a kitchen granite countertop can be dramatically enhanced by the correct countertop edge. The casual observer will just notice the general look of the countertop not knowing that the granite edge has a lot to do with its overall beauty. Knowing this, many stone manufacturers recommend that you invest some time in choosing the right edge so that you'll get the most benefit from your granite countertop.

Eased Edge also known as Flat or straight edge, is a basic square cut. It's the cheapest edge cut available and is considered the most simplistic. This is the most common design of a granite edge. It is the one installed in granite countertops of standard homes. The design is simple but can give you the best in functionality. It is very easy to maintain because it is easy to clean and left over food and liquid will not easily lodged into the straight edges. The edges are not actually straight but are eased or rounded off a little bit to reduce the sharpness. If you have too much daily activity on your countertop, then this is the one for you.

Bevel Edge-This design is more attractive than the straight edge. The countertop edge is beveled at about 45º angle and can be placed at the top or at the bottom of the edge. This can be appropriate for a kitchen or bathroom countertop that has moderate to high daily activity.

Full bullnose- This edge is completely rounded with curved edges on both sides, making the countertop's edge a perfect half-circle. Full bullnose is especially good for safety, as its entire edge is rounded. While bumps against the lip of the countertop may still happen, with rounded bullnose edges, no longer will cuts or scrapes be a problem.

Half Bullnose- This edge is rounded off rathed than squared like the flat edge. It offers a smooth round surface and shows a greater cross section of you granite. The bottom of this edge is flat.

Demi-bullnose-Edges are flat beneath the countertop but possess an oblong, rather than round, taper. It looks great on every stone and allows the stone to show movement over the edge. The Demi also makes the stone appear thicker. The shape directs any spills away from the cabinets and it's comfortable to lean over This edge is very smooth and flowing and shows a large cross section of the countertop making it appear thicker.

Ogee edge- contains two sweeping arches, one concave and one convex. The edge is considered a more elegant design. An Ogee granite edge can dramatically improve the look of your countertop. The ogee edge is considered a premium edge by most granite fabricators and generally costs more.
